The Royal Horseguards Hotel

Deluxe room

A five-star grand abode with AA Rosette dining on the capital’s Victoria Embankment, overlooking the River Thames and London Eye – breakfast included

Gazing out majestically across the River Thames, The Royal Horseguards Hotel squares up to the London Eye across the water in all its stately glory, from its prime position on the capital’s Victoria Embankment. While its elegant beauty is there for all to see, this grand five-star abode holds a secret up its sleeve: the building was once the headquarters of the British Secret Service – keep an eye out for the telltale blue plaque giving a nod to MI6 founder and former resident, Sir Mansfield Cumming.

Behind its Victorian facade, interiors are just as glorious – expect original tiled floors, statement chandeliers, a marble staircase and ornate ceilings, alongside a sprinkling of modern flourishes. After a day’s exploring the capital, retreat to the sumptuous lounge for afternoon tea, but be sure to save room for the AA Rosette-awarded cuisine at One Twenty One Two restaurant, named after the famous telephone number of former neighbor Scotland Yard (Whitehall 1212).

Later, scope out the speakeasy-style private entrance for the Equus bar, where talented mixologists rustle up delicious cocktails, many named after previous guests – a Winston Churchill, anyone? Throw all this together, and it’s easy to see why The Royal Horseguards Hotel comes with a lofty recommendation from Forbes Travel Guide and Condé Nast Johansens.
