A cosy beach-view bolthole sitting pretty on Dorset's Studland Bay, just steps from the golden coastline – with breakfast and dinner included

A glorious sliver of golden coastline in Dorset, the Isle of Purbeck peninsula is dotted with caramel beaches, sandy dunes and crumbly cliffs – an unsullied pocket of natural beauty, much of it under UNESCO protection. A stone’s throw from Studland Bay – a soft golden arc edged by a rugged nature reserve – you’ll discover Knoll House, a blue-shuttered gem with trailing plants tumbling down its white façade to the flower-filled garden.

On your doorstep is a tangle of walking trails, weaving along the clifftop coastline, across rippling sand dunes and through the rugged heathland of the wildlife-rich reserve. After long, windswept rambles, retreat to your cosy bolthole for a decadent cream tea in the teal-hued Bistro, followed a few laps of the plant-lined indoor pool to make room for dinner.

Elsewhere, you’ll discover a sauna, steam room and hot tub with views across the Downs, as well as two tennis courts, a seasonal outdoor pool and a pitch-and-putt golf course with wonderful views over the Studland Bay beaches and Old Harry Rocks.

Accommodation

Channelling a quaint coastal-country vibe, rooms are awash in creamy hues and natural furnishings – think wicker chairs and pale-wood bedside tables, some accented with bursts of muted blue-greens and softly checked carpets. Shuttered windows stream natural light inside, while some open onto balconies. For extra space, book a Two Bedroom suite, which sleeps up to four people and is perfect for families.

Amenities:

- En-suite bathroom with shower or bath
- Flatscreen TV on request
- Tea and coffee facilities
- Hairdryer

Dining

With idyllic views stretching across the bay, The Restaurant serves up traditional British-French plates, rustled up using the freshest of ingredients and served in an elegant but laid-back setting. For a more casual vibe, make a beeline for the teal-blue Bistro, where you can feast on sharing platters, fresh seafood and classic dishes – plus the quintessential Dorset cream tea is perfect for a pitstop after windswept walks along the rugged coastline.

Wellness

Surrounded by huge potted plants and overflowing hanging baskets, swimmers can take a dip beneath the soaring wooden ceiling in the indoor pool, or swim alfresco in the seasonal outdoor pool. The wellness area also includes a sauna and steam room, as well as an indoor and outdoor hot tub – the perfect spot to switch off while taking in the views over the downs.

For action, there are two tennis courts and a par-three, pitch-and-putt golf course with views over Studland Bay’s golden beaches and Old Harry Rocks. Alternatively, make the most of the beautiful surroundings with long strolls along the coastline, kayaking and windsurfing on Studland Beach, or go out sailing, horse riding, diving or fishing – just ask at reception for details.

Location

It’s all about the picturesque walks in this glorious coastal pocket of Dorset: you’re an hour’s clifftop walk from Swanage, while a four-mile amble will take you to the chalky Old Harry Rocks. A little closer to home is a tangle of trails weaving through the dunes of Studland National Nature Reserve, the deer-speckled National Trust Woodland and the rugged terrain of Godlingston Heath. Alternatively, stroll down to Studland Bay to sink your toes into the golden sand or try some watersports.

Travelling with kids?

If you're travelling with little ones, there's the chance to book a Two-bedroom suite, which sleeps up to four people – perfect for smaller families. A kids' menu, as well as the option to pick smaller plates from the main menu, takes the hassle out of meal times, while a babysitting service is available for those parents who want to linger over drinks, without keeping their children up late. Elsewhere, there's a games room with table tennis, a pool table and table football, as well as some vintage arcade games, plus an outdoor adventure playground, a large-scale garden chess set and seasonal paddling pool.
